Sweat the Small Stuff?

How to Get What You Think You Want

Why are do we always say don't sweat the small stuff? I find that if I ignore the small stuff it grows into big stuff. I have been thinking about this lately with regards to the law of attraction. You know like attracts like and all that.

There's this idea that all I need to do is place an idea in my consciousness and I will attract it to me. But my work with this has not yielded the results I have wanted. For instance, I have been certain that I would win the lottery. Ah, laugh if you will, but I just knew it would happen! And then it didn't. I had done all the things I was supposed to. I put crystals in the appropriate places. I made a vision board with pictures of yachts and beach houses. I left notes on my mirror that said I was a winner and all abundance is coming my way. I took all the steps the law of attraction books told me would help me bring these things into my life. All I had to do was put this desire into the universe and believe it hard enough then poof! it would appear.

It reminds me of It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and Linus waiting for said pumpkin. He finds the most sincere pumpkin patch and tries to get everyone to miss the Halloween party and stay with him. He spends a whole year planning, maybe he made some vision boards, and reminds himself again and again about sincerity and faith that he will come. But all that unravels when little Sally comes along and tries to believe in him but ends up planting a few seeds of doubt. He tries to resist but has one slip up when he says “if” the great pumpkin comes! As soon as he says this one if…whoosh all the thinking and preparing and shouting he has done unfurls all of it and he says “I'm doomed”. This one moment of insincerity is enough to prevent the great pumpkin from gracing his pumpkin patch and it is all his fault.

This means that believing what you think, is the key. Well, how do we make ourselves believe it? How do I make it click so that I know it, deep in my bones without doubt? And why when I think I want one thing so badly do other things show up in my life that I don't want? Riddle me that Batman. Like a bad relationship, or the job wasn't what I expected. I didn't think these things so how did I attract them?

Maybe the law of attraction doesn't work that way. What if it listens to how we feel. Maybe there are feelings inside of us that are not what we think we feel? What if those feelings that come up sometimes that say we are not good enough, smart enough, thin enough, pretty enough, this enough, that enough…is what is actually creating the things we are attracting into our lives? That might explain why we often get things we don't really want or we don't get the things we want. It's like a secret radar sending out a false desire into the universe bringing us a bunch of crap!

So….what can we do to figure out where and what this radar is up to? It takes some investigation. This is not something with an easy button. You cannot look outside to someone or something to work this through it, it is completely under your control. And although it is a simple concept, it's incredibly challenging to put into practice.

First you need to discover these false beliefs that exist inside of you and challenge them. These are those feelings you try to ignore. You know the one that says you can't really love yourself until you are _____ (skinny, strong, tall, popular, contributing, smart, admired, rich, successful, happy). You don't want to think (ah there is that mind again) that you feel any of these things, but you do. Deep down you know you have that small seed of doubt about being worthy of receiving happiness, love, money etc.

It is that seed of doubt that is your radar to the universe. You cannot hide it or think it away. This is why you receive things in your life that you do not want and not the things you do. This unsealed belief inside of you that you are not worthy of the things you want. What if the law of attraction is a gift, not a punishment. A gift to help you see these unsealed emotions. Maybe its as easy as paying attention to what is showing up in your life, especially those things that seem incongruent with what you want, to learn what these emotions are.

And I think the more sensitive we become to what these messages are the less impact they have over our lives. You see the first time the message comes through it is as a feather across the face, so light you barely notice. Next its a strong wind, then a pelting rain and if that is not enough a slap. Eventually, if you don't pay attention, your entire house falls on you. This is a loving consequence to get your attention. Maybe we lost our job, or relationship because we weren't paying attention to the signs the law of attraction was bringing us. It is the universe trying to show you what exists inside of you because knowledge is power. Knowing yourself so you can release these unsealed emotions and be free to create the most beautiful experience of life that is possible. God isn't trying to hurt you she is trying to help you.

So sweat the small stuff because when you do you never have to fight off the big stuff. Ask yourself always what would love do? Love of others, love of self and mostly love of truth. Not your truth but “the” truth. Universal truth. And the truth shall set you free.
