Wherever You Go, There You Are
Do you ever find yourself reading a story or a book, or maybe watching a movie and the life and the place seem so real that you daydream about what your life would be like if you lived there? Have you ever thought if I could just move there or live in that house or see that view your life would be amazing? I have told myself if I have the perfect view from my window or the most quiet serene room I would be my most creative, productive and happiest self. All my relationships would get better, money would flow towards me; I would lose weight or write that novel if only….
I began to realize I was doing this in my late 30's. Before then I wholeheartedly believed that moving homes, or cities or jobs or relationships would make me be someone I could love. Someone who had everything together. Someone who was perfect.
Well guess what? It didn't work. What it did do is keep me so busy that I didn't have to look too closely at myself. I always had a fire to put out a room to paint or a box to pack. I had the excitement of anticipation as I learned a new city or made new friends or started a new job. And I would be happy; for a while.
But then the old discomfort would creep up. The busyness no longer hid the cracks in my life.
I would have to say the most frenetic time of moving was when my marriage began to fall apart. My husbands affairs were well know to everyone and I suspected them as well. But I thought maybe if I create the most perfect home, be the perfect mother and perfect hostess he would want to come home.
I realize now that this is trying to create a life from the outside in. I thought if my exterior is beautiful then the interior will follow. But this is not how manifesting works. Your life is created from the inside out. So no matter how much paint or polish you put on yourself or your surroundings, inside you will still feel exactly as you did before. The pleasant feelings of happiness or pride or satisfaction will be fleeting.
Lasting and real change occurs when you rearrange your inner home. When you unpack all the negativity's and hurts so they no longer drag you down. Once you do this there is space to allow the sunshine in. You will be free of burdens and expectations and you will create the unique life that is truly an expression of you.
The key is baby steps. Did you ever try to clean out all your closets at one time? All that happens is you become overwhelmed and your whole house is a mess with your stuff everywhere. The best way is one closet at a time. Heck sometimes it is only one drawer at a time. The same is true with your uncomfortable feelings. Allow them to come to the surface. At first you might only look in that drawer and then quickly shut it and go for a run, or eat a donut. But the next time you just might keep the drawer open for a while so you have to look at all the messy feelings inside. Eventually you allow yourself to touch them, to feel them, to release them. Then you must leave the drawer empty so you can get comfortable without this thing you have been carrying around as long as you can remember. And eventually you might put something inside the drawer that you treasure; something that you love and carry it with you forever.
This clearing our of your soul is the best housekeeping you can ever do.
